Kits are Born

Dappleleaf awoken from her slumber. It was raining softly. It was a chilly afternoon. She stretched her back and walked around the nursery a few times. "What should I do today?"she pondered

Phoenixflare woke up. The first sight she saw was Dappleleaf pacing back and forth. "Morning Dappleleaf," she called. "Are your kits going to be born soon?"

"Yes, I think so."she mewed back. She sat down and gave her chest several licks.

Phoenixflare thought for a moment. "Well, I hope they're born soon. I love kits when they're just born. They're tiny little fluffballs." she indicated with her paws and formed a circle. "That big."

Dappleleaf purred. She felt sick to her stomach though. "Phoenixflare, is it normal to feel sorta sick."Dappleleaf mewed.

Phoenixflare nodded. "Yeah. I felt the same thing. It's the kits getting ready to be born!" she purred. "You'd better go find Emeraldsky."

"I don't know if I can get up...."she groaned. She felt bad. Worse than she ever did. "Can you tell her to come here, I don't think I can"Dappleleaf asked

Phoenixflare nodded. "It's ok. You'll make it. That's the sign that your kits are going to be born THIS day." She pelted off to the medicine cat's den. "Emeraldsky!" she yowled. "Dappleleaf's about to kit!"

Dappleleaf was elated. today.... she thought. Anoother paincome about. Dappleleaf dared not to say a word. She was in silent pain.

Emeraldsky's head shot up. "Now?" He asked Pheonixflare. He shook his head. "Time flies." He mewed calmly. He picked up some borage leaves and walked to the nursery. On the way he nodded to a fallen twig on the ground and mewed, "Pick that up and bring it with you!" He padded to the nursery enterance. "How are you feeling Dappleleaf?"

"I am fine..."Dappleleaf mewed. Her stomach was in pain. But in the end, kits would be here

Phienixflafe nodded anfd picked up the twig in her jaws. She padded after Emeraldsky and gave it to Dappleleaf.

Dappleleaf stared at the twigs. She wondered what they were for. She focused on relaxing. Breathe in breathe out. She thought.

Phoenixflare nodded at Dappleleaf. "You'll be fine. Stay calm. Breathe in, breath out. Here, this stick is for you to bite on when the kits are going to come. It'll let you not scream and thrash and all that, and I don't want a flying paw to hit me in the face," she purred the last bit.

She chewed on the stick. It tasted awful but she kept on chewing it anyways. The pain was constant.she tried not to whimper. No, Dappleleaf wouldn't be weak. She chewed on the dry stick and focused on breathing

Phoenixflare shook her head. "Don't chew," she mewed. "Bite it when Emeraldsky gives you the signal, ok?"

Dappleleaf stopped chewing.She wanted to chew on it. She sighed. The rain peppered the ground making the camp cloudy witt mist. The perfect day for her kits to be born. Just as she wished.

Phoenixflare glanced at her brother. "Come on!" she urged. She whipped her tail back and forth as she stared at the rainy sky.

Dappleleaf was growi g impatient. At the moment, she could feel the kits coming. For real. She bit her tongue in pain.

Phoenixflare noticed Dappleleaf was getting irritated and her kits were coming, fast! She immediately grabbed the stick in her jaws and gave it to Dappleleaf. "Bite!" she yowled.

She bit down on the stick. The dry taste invaded her tongue.she felt the searing pain. She bit down harder. She was a still as a rock, arock in pain that is. She tried not to show her pain.

Phoenixflare patter her flank with a paw. "It's going to be fine," she soothed. "Think of your happy place. Think of you and your kits with Bluetalon, all a happy family. You will LIVE."

Dappleleaf obviously knew that. She focused on her stick chewing. Shefocused on the steady raindrops. Finally, a orange tabby kit cried. Dappleleaf's eyes brightened. She knew she ws not done yet though.

Phoenixflare purred when she saw a orange tabby kit emerge and immediately started to lick it's fur the other way, to warm it up. The kit mewed for its mother's milk but Phoenixflare new that Dappleleaf wasn't done yet.

"oh no....oh no.....oh no.....oh no..." Bluetalon murmured as he ran into camp eager to see his mate hopefully he wasn't too late. "I must tell her." he quietly mewed to himself as he ran.
