Rememberance Day/ Veteran's Day
In France and Belgium 1918 on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, the guns on both sides of the Western Front went silent. Thus ended four long years of a war that had touched the whole world. From that time on we remember the lives of those brave men who fought and died in that conflict (and all other world conflicts up to the present day), so that never again, least we forget.
We also honour the brave men [and women] who have fought for freedom across the globe, and have survived.
Who or what will you be remembering this Friday?

Iceclaw is from Singapore [so of course she wouldn't know].
As a Canadian, I celebrate Remembrance Day. On that day we wear red Poppy pins like this one [a reference to a WW1 poem In Flanders Field the poppies grow, Between the crosses row on row.]:
These poppies are usually obtained through donation. The money goes to fund our veterans.

Re: Rememberance Day/ Veteran's Day
I will remember my grandpa [my dad's dad], even though I never knew him. He was in the German Army of WW2 as an ambulance driver. At Stalingrad, he not only survived the horrors of that battle, but also the horrors of the Soviet P.O.W camps that soon followed after. [of the 55,000 German and allied troops who survied and surrendered at the battle, only 5,000 would return home alive]
Also my uncle [my dad's younger brother], who has served at Croatia and Cyprus as a UN peacekeeper.

A [war] veteran is someone who has served or is serving in the armed forces, and has experienced direct exposure to military conflicts.
So for Canada, our veterans would include those who fought in both world wars [sadly the last remaining WW1 veterans have died], as well as the Korean war, UN peacekeeping missions around the globe, and our country's involvement in Afghanistan.
Veterans of the United States would also include the following above, but also added to the list would be those who served in the Vietnam war and the two Iraqi wars.
In both countries, veterans are highly honoured and respected for the sacrifices they have given. Many of them suffer from major injuries and/or illnesses [like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder] obtained from the conflicts they were involved.
So that is why on every November 11th, we give remembrance to those who had sacrificed their lives [Remembrance Day], as well as pay homage to all veterans still with us [Veterans Day].

Re: Rememberance Day/ Veteran's Day
My Grandpa was also a veteran, he got a disease in his heart from the conditions they were in and it got better, but, he had a heart attack and went to the military hospital and he died because they didn`t have the technology they needed. My Grandpas son, John, was in the military and he got imprisoned by the bad guys [I might get in trouble if I say their name] and when he finally got out, he was mentally challenged and he said he never wanted to be a part of this family and we haven`t seen him since. My dad, Johns brother, was the only veteran who didn`t have a horrid fait.
