PROLOGUE
Cherryfrost let out a pain-filled gasp, her eyes squeezing shut.
“The first one’s coming,” Dawncloud meowed soothingly, though inside her mind was whirling. What do I do? she thought, terrified, looking around in panic. It was her first time delivering kits without Jayfeather by her side. “Willowshade!” she called, beckoning the tortoiseshell queen.
“Yes?” she murmured, looking down at Cherryfrost.
The young ginger queen looked exhausted, and her breath was coming in gasps.
Dawncloud looked up. “Can you go get a stick?”
“Of course!” Willowshade replied.
Dawncloud turned back to Cherryfrost, pressing her paws gently on the queen’s rippling belly. A spasm passed along her flank, and a damp bundle popped out. Willowshade padded back into the den with the stick.
“Good,” Dawncloud meowed, angling her ears forward. “Now can you nip open the sack and lick the kit’s fur the wrong way?” she asked, her voice quivering.
“Sure.” Willowshade replied.
Dawncloud picked up the stick again, giving it to Cherryfrost.
“The second one is coming now,” the medicine cat murmured. Cherryfrost thrashed, clamping down on the stick as another spasm passed along her flank. A bundle dropped into the mossy nest, and Dawncloud nipped open the sack, purring at the silver kit that tumbled out. She quickly gave it to Willowshade who had finished licking the first kit. Dawncloud put the first kit by Cherryfrost’s belly, and it began to suckle. The medicine cat gave the new queen some borage, calling Firestorm inside as she placed the second kit by its mother’s belly.
The dark ginger tom rushed inside, gasping with delight as he saw his kits.
“They’re beautiful!” he purred, and Cherryfrost weakly lifted her head.
“What do you want to call them?” she murmured, clearly exhausted.
“Well,” Firestorm meowed, tapping the first kit with his tail-tip and laughing as it squealed in protest. “This one could be Dreamkit.” Cherryfrost looked down at the second kit.
“We could call that one Silverkit because of her silver fur,” the queen suggested. Firestorm nodded, and Dawncloud backed out of the nursery, heading towards the medicine den to catch some sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Dawncloud!”
The medicine cat whirled to see a grayish blue she-cat.
“Dawncloud!” the StarClan cat called again. “I have a message for you!”
“Bluestar!” the medicine cat greeted with a purr. “I’m ready to receive the message,” she added solemnly. Bluestar’s eyes grew cloudy and distant as she spoke.
“Do not ignore the dream …”
“What do you mean?” Dawncloud yelped, but it as too late. In a flash, everything began to fade away …
CHAPTER ONE
Dreamkit’s eyes flew open as she realized it – today was the day that she’d receive her apprentice name!
“Silverkit!” she called softly, pressing her muzzle against her sister’s ear.
“What?” Silverkit groaned, flailing. “Why do you always have to wake-” Before she could finish, Dreamkit pounced on her.
“Today we’re going to have our apprentice ceremony! That’s why!” she piped. Silverkit’s eyes cleared instantly.
“Yay!” she yowled, bright and bubbly. Their mother, Cherryfrost, stirred, then sat up.
“Are you excited for your apprentice ceremony?” she asked, her eyes glowing with pride.
“Yes,” Dreamkit answered with wide eyes, “but I’m going to miss you.” Cherryfrost’s eyes twinkled as she laughed.
“Don’t worry,” she purred. “Once you’re an apprentice, you’ll be too busy to miss me!” Dreamkit suddenly felt better; her mother always made her happier.
“Race you to the fresh-kill pile!” she suggested, dancing in front of Silverkit, then haring off.
“Hey!” Silverkit’s voice came from just behind. “You got a head start!” In the end, Silverkit got there first, her long legs easily beating Dreamkit’s short, plump ones.
“That’s why I always go first!” the white and gray she-kit puffed. “You always beat me!” A few heartbeats later, Cherryfrost joined them. They shared a mouse, then went back to the nursery. Dreamkit felt too tired to anything but lie down and rest. She’d just realized how early she’d woken up. The kit stirred as she felt her mother’s soothing tongue on her pelt, but was asleep a few moments later.
“Wake up!”
Dreamkit heard Silverkit’s loud mew in her ear, getting to her paws right away. Her apprentice ceremony! Cherryfrost quickly washed them again, and they padded out of the nursery.
“Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the Highledge!” Hollystar yowled, her eyes shining. Dreamkit sat up as straight as she could, looking at all the warriors in awe, wondering who her mentor would be. There were Lilypool, Honeyfur, Snowrose … the deputy, Moletail, Blackfur, Poppydream, Oaklight, Birchleaf … and so many more! She couldn’t believe that Silverkit wanted to be a medicine cat … at least she knew who her mentor would be. Silverkit was staring at Dawncloud.
“Isn’t she pretty?” she whispered, and Dreamkit rolled her eyes. Silverkit was always saying stupid things like that. Hollystar began to speak as soon as the last warrior had padded out of the warriors’ den.
“Dreamkit,” she called, “from this day one until you receive your warrior name, you will be called Dreampaw. Snowrose, you are my loyal deputy and you have had many moons of experience. You will be mentor to Dreampaw.” The young she-cat padded up to Snowrose, touching her nose to the white she-cat’s. She couldn’t believe how lucky she was to be the deputy’s apprentice!
“Silverkit,” Hollystar continued, “from this day on until you receive your medicine cat name, you will be called Silverpaw. Dawncloud, I know that I am putting Silverpaw in safe paws. I pray that StarClan gives your apprentice all the wisdom and strength she will need.” Silverpaw trotted forward, reaching up to touch Dawncloud’s nose.
“Dreampaw! Silverpaw! Dreampaw! Silverpaw!” the Clan cheered.
Snowrose got to her paws, swiftly followed by Dreampaw.
“What are we going to do first?” the apprentice asked curiously.
“We’re going out to see our territory,” the white deputy answered.
“Are we going to see borders?” Dreampaw pestered.
“Yes – we’re going by the Twolegplace,” her mentor replied.
“If I see any kittypets, can I chase them out?”
“Yes,” Snowrose purred, “but I don’t think they’d be scared of you! Follow me.” She turned, padding towards the camp entrance, Dreampaw scrambling after her. They kept quiet until they reached the Twolegplace border where Snowrose stopped abruptly. Dreampaw had been so lost in thought that she hadn’t noticed, and promptly bumped into Snowrose’s rump.
“Oops!” she yelped.
“It’s okay,” Snowrose purred. “Today we’re going to practice your stalking. What can you scent?”
Dreampaw sniffed the air. The gray and white she-cat would tell there was a mouse nearby, but what was that other strange scent? She’d never scented that before. She sniffed again, wrinkling her nose. Whatever it was, she didn’t want to smell it ever again! It smelled disgusting!
“Eeeew!” she hissed.
“What?” Snowrose opened her jaws, catching the scent as well. Her eyes widened. “Fox!” she gasped.
“Are we going to attack it?” Dreamkit chirped, excited.
“No,” Snowrose meowed shakily, “of course not. Anyway, you don’t know any battle moves, and I can’t take on a fox all by myself. Let’s go report this to Hollystar.”
“We’re going back to camp?” Dreampaw questioned, disappointed.
“Yes,” Snowrose replied. “This is serious. Come – follow me.”
With that, the white she-cat turned, loping back to camp. Dreampaw followed quietly. When they reached camp, Snowrose told Dreampaw to go to the apprentices’ den and get to sleep.
“I’m really proud of you for scenting the fox,” her mentor praised her. “You deserve a rest.”
Dreampaw padded into the apprentices’ den, finding a nest for her. She curled up into a ball, swiftly falling asleep. I’m finally a true apprentice of ThunderClan, she thought, before her eyes closed.
Chapter 2
"Let all cats old enough to catch their prey gather beneath the Highledge!" Hollystar's yowl woke Dreampaw up. She opened her eyes sleepily and took in her surroundings. Where was she? Where was Cherryfrost? Then she saw Lakepaw sleeping in the corner and remembered what happened yesterday and that she was in the apprentices' den. Mouse brain! she muttered to herself as she padded out of her den. She looked up and blinked from the rays from the rising sun. Hollystar was standing on the Highledge, waiting for the clan to gather.
"What's happenning?" Silverpaw asked curiously as she bounded up to Dreampaw.
"Hollystar's making an announcement," she answered and started washing her ears.
"Why?" What's it's going to be about?" Silverpaw asked.
"That's what we all want to know," mewed Lakepaw from behind them. I bet it's about that fox that we smelled yesterday. thought Dreampaw, though she didn't say anything. When alll the cats had gathered, Hollystar started speaking, her voice echoing across the stone walls of their camp. "Yesterdaay, when Snowrose and Dreampaw were practising stalking, they scented fox. Snowrose suggested that it's only one fox, but we can't be sure. Today, I'm going to send out a patrol to chase it from our territory." she paused and surveyed the cats below her.
"Firestorm, you will go, as well as Poppydream, Lilypool, Blackpelt, and Pinefall. You may go as soon as you are ready. This meeting is now over." The chosen cats nodded and prepared to go.
"Dreampaw!" Snowrose's called, "Yesterday we never finished you're stalking lesson, let's try again."
Dreampaw agreed enthusiastically and trotted after Snowrose as she left camp.
"Okay, what can you smell?" asked Snowrose.
Dreampaw lifted her nose and sniffed the air. There was that horrible scent of fox, but it was fainter and the mouthwatering smell of mouse covered it."
"I can smell a mouse!" she mewed.
Snowrose nodded. "Do you know how to stalk a mouse?" Dreampaw slid into a crouch, moving forward as swiftly as she could while being silent. "Pretty good," mewed Snowrose approvingly. "Just remembered to keep your tail down and step silently, because a mouse will hear you before it smells or sees you."
Dreampaw listened carefully and tried again. She kept her tail down, moved forward silently, and visionized that a mouse was scuffling among the leaves under that oak tree. She was about to pounce when she saw the mouse. There was a mouse there! It was a good plump one too. It was under a leaf before so she din't see it but it was easy to see now. The mouse was nibbling a nut. Remembering what Snowrose said, she took another silent step forward, and pounced. The mouse was so busy nibbling its nut that it didn't notice her until the last moment. There was nowhere to run now. Dreampaw landed right on it and killed it with a swift bite.
"That was wonderful! You caught your first prey!" exclaimed Snowrose from behind her. Dreampaw basked in her mentor's praise. She had caught her first mouse!
She was still purring when they heard a screech.
The fox! Dreampaw froze. Snowrose sniffed the air and then mewed urgently to Dreampaw. "Time to go!"
Dreampaw needed no encouraging. She ran after Snowrose.
They burst through a bush.
The fox was there. A small cat lay unmoving in front of the fox.
Dreampaw was terrified. This was only her second day as an apprentice! She didn't know what to do! Snowrose did. She attacked the fox from the back, snarling and clawing like a warrior of Lionclan. The fox spun around, enraged, and started fighting Snowrose. Dreampaw spun into action. She ran to the cat lying still on the ground. It was a dark misty gray she-cat. She had several wounds on her body and they were bleeding heavily. She needed treatment immediately. "Let's get you to camp." Dreampaw mewed. She dragged the cat by the scruff behind a bush when she heard Snowrose screech in pain. She looked up and saw that Snowrose was trapped underneath the fox, it was about to kill her!
Dreampaw let out a screech of fury and charged at the fox, sinking her teeth into its leg as hard as she could. The fox yowled in pain and shook its leg, flinging Dreampaw off. She crashed into a tree, momentarily stunned.
But that had been enough time for Snowrose to recover. She got up and continued to fight the fox, now fiercer than ever. Dreampaw noted with satisfaction that the fox was limping. Snowrose was driving the fox back steadily when Firestrom and his patrol appeared. They leaped at the fox. The fox took one look at the cats and fled, Firestorm chasing after it.
"Are you okay?" asked Snowrose. She was leaning heavily against Lilypool.
"I'm fine, just a little dizzy." Then Dreampaw remembered the other cat. "But she's not!" She quickly showed Lilypool and Snowrose the wounded cat. "I think she was attacked by the fox." She mewed.
Firestorm was back from chasing the fox. "It's well off our territory," He mewed when Blackpelt gave him a questioning glance.
"We were tracking the fox. Its a smart creature. It kept doubling back, we barely managed to find it." he mewed
"We encountered the fox after our training session. I attacked it while Dreampaw dragged this cat from harm's way. The fox almost killed me but Dreampaw bit its leg so hard that it started limping. After that, it was easier to drive it away." she mewed. Firestorm looked at Dreampaw proudly. "I always knew that you were a little fighter." he mewed.
Dreampaw felt proud. She had attacked a fox! That wasn't what an apprentice did everyday.
Chapter 3
Lilypool sighed. "I hate to break it up, but we need to get back to camp. Explanations can wait for later. Her wounds can't." she mewed, signaling with her tail to the gray she-cat.
Everyone agreed. They took a while getting back to camp. Lilypool had to help Snowrose, Dreampaw was still a little dizzy and Blackpelt had to help guide her and Pinefall and Firestorm had to carry the mysterious wounded cat.
When Dreampaw entered camp, Cherryfrost ran overand started making a fuss. "Where were you? You could have gotten yourself killed!" She looked up, and for the first time, she seemed to notice the other cats. She gasped when she saw Snowrose. "Firestorm!" She called to her mate. "Help Snowrose to the Medicine cat den. Lilypool went to help carry the cat, while Firestorm helped Snowrose.
When they got back, Hollystar called a clan meeting. Dreampaw felt like she was going to fall asleep on her paws, but she padded over to the Highledge and sat down.
"Today Snowrose and Dreampaw found the fox when they were hunting. Firestorm's patrol found them in time and helped drive off the fox." She told the clan. "I belive that it is well of our territory." She mewed. "But wait, I havn't finished yet. Snowrose and Dreampaw found a strange cat attacked by the fox. When she wakes up, we will hold another meeting. Also, Dreampaw has shown courage today by attacking the fox even though she hasn't even been taught the basic battle moves. She saved Snowrose's life. I am proud to have her as an apprentice in Thunderclan." Hollystar blinked warmly at her. As Dreampaw looked up proudly as her clanmates turned to look at her.
When the meeting was over, Dreampaw padded over to the medicine cat den. She saw her sister, Silverpaw, heading towards her. "I can't believe she praised me in front of the clan." Dreampaw mewed when Silverpaw reached her. "You deserved it." Silverpaw mewed. "You saved our deputy." Dreampaw changed the subject. "So, how's the strange cat?" She asked. Silverpaw looked down. "She's still unconscious." Silverpaw mewed sadly. "I was hoping she would wake up soon. I want to know how she got attacked and where her parents are. Dawncloud caught me about to squeeze a bundle of wet moss on her." Silverpaw admitted ruefully.
Dreampaw purred in amusement.
When they got to the medicine cat den, Dreampaw padded in, followed by Silverpaw.
Dreampaw saw the cat in a mossy nest.
Dreampaw padded over and crouched down, grooming the cat's fur.
Her fur was matted with blood, with cobwebs pressed onto the wounds.
Dreampaw finished grooming, sitting up. "When do you think she'll wake up?" She asked Silverpaw. "Oh, maybe tomorrow." "Sure. I'm going to get some sleep. Bye."
As Dreampaw padded towards the apprentices' den, she couldn't help thinking about the cat.
That night, she slept soundly, without a dream.
Hollystar's call jolted her awake. "Let all the cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the highlegde!"
As the cats padded out of their dens, Hollystar spoke. "Today at dawn, the strange cat has woken up." She announced. "She is in the medicine cat den right now, but will join us in a few heartbeats." As the clan waited silenty, Dreampaw thought she heard a faint mew in the medicine cat den. It didn't sound like Silverpaw or Dawncloud.The cat! She thought. Dreampaw saw something moving in the medicine cat den. Then, slowly, a cat padded out. She stared at all the cats, and shrank back a bit.
Dreampaw looked up as Hollystar spoke. "Will you please tell us your name, little one?" She asked softly.
The cat spoke quietly, and Dreampaw strained to hear. "My name is Mist." "Will you tell us what happened to you, Mist?" Hollystar pressed.
"Well, I just woke up from my nap, and my mother told me to stay in our makeshift den. She said that she scented fox." Mist kept getting louder and louder, sounding more and more confident.
"She and my father went out to investigate, and I waited for a long time. They didn't come back, so I stalked out to look for them. I scented fox, and it was really near, I saw the dead bodies of my mother and father, and I was trembling with fear and rage. At the same time, the fox scented me, and before I had time to run, it attacked me. I fainted on the spot, and I guess that's where you found me."
"Thank you for sharing your story." Hollystar mewed softly. "You may go back to thye medicine cat den, and I shall think about what we will do with you."
Mist sprang up. "Wait. Umm, Silverpaw sort of told me about the clans, and I umm, want to join." Mist looked down at her paws. "That's a good idea, Mist." Hollystar purred. "We will see to your apprentice ceremony around sunhigh." I need to think about your mentor. This meeting is over." With that, Hollystar turned and bounded off the Highledge and padded into her den.
As the cats padded into circles, murmuring quietly, Dreampaw ran over to Mist. "Hi!" She mewed. "Hello!" Mist replied. "I can't wait for my apprentice ceremony. I wonder who my mentor will be." "My mentor is the deputy!" Dreampaw told her.
Mist purred. "Lucky." "Want me to show you around?" Dreampaw offered.
"Sure! Thanks" Mist replied. "Can we start with the apprentices' den?" "Come with me!" Dreampaw bounded over to the apprentices' den with Mist right behind. "Let's go inside!" Dreampaw mewed when they got there. As the two friends padded into the apprentices' den, they didn't notice some cat watching them. Watching them closely...
“Isn’t she pretty?” she whispered, and Dreamkit rolled her eyes. Silverkit was always saying stupid things like that. Hollystar began to speak as soon as the last warrior had padded out of the warriors’ den.
“Dreamkit,” she called, “from this day one until you receive your warrior name, you will be called Dreampaw. Snowrose, you are my loyal deputy and you have had many moons of experience. You will be mentor to Dreampaw.” The young she-cat padded up to Snowrose, touching her nose to the white she-cat’s. She couldn’t believe how lucky she was to be the deputy’s apprentice!
“Silverkit,” Hollystar continued, “from this day on until you receive your medicine cat name, you will be called Silverpaw. Dawncloud, I know that I am putting Silverpaw in safe paws. I pray that StarClan gives your apprentice all the wisdom and strength she will need.” Silverpaw trotted forward, reaching up to touch Dawncloud’s nose.
“Dreampaw! Silverpaw! Dreampaw! Silverpaw!” the Clan cheered.
Snowrose got to her paws, swiftly followed by Dreampaw.
“What are we going to do first?” the apprentice asked curiously.
“We’re going out to see our territory,” the white deputy answered.
“Are we going to see borders?” Dreampaw pestered.
“Yes – we’re going by the Twolegplace,” her mentor replied.
“If I see any kittypets, can I chase them out?”
“Yes,” Snowrose purred, “but I don’t think they’d be scared of you! Follow me.” She turned, padding towards the camp entrance, Dreampaw scrambling after her. They kept quiet until they reached the Twolegplace border where Snowrose stopped abruptly. Dreampaw had been so lost in thought that she hadn’t noticed, and promptly bumped into Snowrose’s rump.
“Oops!” she yelped.
“It’s okay,” Snowrose purred. “Today we’re going to practice your stalking. What can you scent?”
Dreampaw sniffed the air. The gray and white she-cat would tell there was a mouse nearby, but what was that other strange scent? She’d never scented that before. She sniffed again, wrinkling her nose. Whatever it was, she didn’t want to smell it ever again! It smelled disgusting!
“Eeeew!” she hissed.
“What?” Snowrose opened her jaws, catching the scent as well. Her eyes widened. “Fox!” she gasped.
“Are we going to attack it?” Dreamkit chirped, excited.
“No,” Snowrose meowed shakily, “of course not. Anyway, you don’t know any battle moves, and I can’t take on a fox all by myself. Let’s go report this to Hollystar.”
“We’re going back to camp?” Dreampaw questioned, disappointed.
“Yes,” Snowrose replied. “This is serious. Come – follow me.”
With that, the white she-cat turned, loping back to camp. Dreampaw followed quietly. When they reached camp, Snowrose told Dreampaw to go to the apprentices’ den and get to sleep.
“I’m really proud of you for scenting the fox,” her mentor praised her. “You deserve a rest.”
Dreampaw padded into the apprentices’ den, finding a nest for her. She curled up into a ball, swiftly falling asleep. I’m finally a true apprentice of ThunderClan, she thought, before her eyes closed.
Chapter 2
"Let all cats old enough to catch their prey gather beneath the Highledge!" Hollystar's yowl woke Dreampaw up. She opened her eyes sleepily and took in her surroundings. Where was she? Where was Cherryfrost? Then she saw Lakepaw sleeping in the corner and remembered what happened yesterday and that she was in the apprentices' den. Mouse brain! she muttered to herself as she padded out of her den. She looked up and blinked from the rays from the rising sun. Hollystar was standing on the Highledge, waiting for the clan to gather.
"What's happenning?" Silverpaw asked curiously as she bounded up to Dreampaw.
"Hollystar's making an announcement," she answered and started washing her ears.
"Why?" What's it's going to be about?" Silverpaw asked.
"That's what we all want to know," mewed Lakepaw from behind them. I bet it's about that fox that we smelled yesterday. thought Dreampaw, though she didn't say anything. When alll the cats had gathered, Hollystar started speaking, her voice echoing across the stone walls of their camp. "Yesterdaay, when Snowrose and Dreampaw were practising stalking, they scented fox. Snowrose suggested that it's only one fox, but we can't be sure. Today, I'm going to send out a patrol to chase it from our territory." she paused and surveyed the cats below her.
"Firestorm, you will go, as well as Poppydream, Lilypool, Blackpelt, and Pinefall. You may go as soon as you are ready. This meeting is now over." The chosen cats nodded and prepared to go.
"Dreampaw!" Snowrose's called, "Yesterday we never finished you're stalking lesson, let's try again."
Dreampaw agreed enthusiastically and trotted after Snowrose as she left camp.
"Okay, what can you smell?" asked Snowrose.
Dreampaw lifted her nose and sniffed the air. There was that horrible scent of fox, but it was fainter and the mouthwatering smell of mouse covered it."
"I can smell a mouse!" she mewed.
Snowrose nodded. "Do you know how to stalk a mouse?" Dreampaw slid into a crouch, moving forward as swiftly as she could while being silent. "Pretty good," mewed Snowrose approvingly. "Just remembered to keep your tail down and step silently, because a mouse will hear you before it smells or sees you."
Dreampaw listened carefully and tried again. She kept her tail down, moved forward silently, and visionized that a mouse was scuffling among the leaves under that oak tree. She was about to pounce when she saw the mouse. There was a mouse there! It was a good plump one too. It was under a leaf before so she din't see it but it was easy to see now. The mouse was nibbling a nut. Remembering what Snowrose said, she took another silent step forward, and pounced. The mouse was so busy nibbling its nut that it didn't notice her until the last moment. There was nowhere to run now. Dreampaw landed right on it and killed it with a swift bite.
"That was wonderful! You caught your first prey!" exclaimed Snowrose from behind her. Dreampaw basked in her mentor's praise. She had caught her first mouse!
She was still purring when they heard a screech.
The fox! Dreampaw froze. Snowrose sniffed the air and then mewed urgently to Dreampaw. "Time to go!"
Dreampaw needed no encouraging. She ran after Snowrose.
They burst through a bush.
The fox was there. A small cat lay unmoving in front of the fox.
Dreampaw was terrified. This was only her second day as an apprentice! She didn't know what to do! Snowrose did. She attacked the fox from the back, snarling and clawing like a warrior of Lionclan. The fox spun around, enraged, and started fighting Snowrose. Dreampaw spun into action. She ran to the cat lying still on the ground. It was a dark misty gray she-cat. She had several wounds on her body and they were bleeding heavily. She needed treatment immediately. "Let's get you to camp." Dreampaw mewed. She dragged the cat by the scruff behind a bush when she heard Snowrose screech in pain. She looked up and saw that Snowrose was trapped underneath the fox, it was about to kill her!
Dreampaw let out a screech of fury and charged at the fox, sinking her teeth into its leg as hard as she could. The fox yowled in pain and shook its leg, flinging Dreampaw off. She crashed into a tree, momentarily stunned.
But that had been enough time for Snowrose to recover. She got up and continued to fight the fox, now fiercer than ever. Dreampaw noted with satisfaction that the fox was limping. Snowrose was driving the fox back steadily when Firestrom and his patrol appeared. They leaped at the fox. The fox took one look at the cats and fled, Firestorm chasing after it.
"Are you okay?" asked Snowrose. She was leaning heavily against Lilypool.
"I'm fine, just a little dizzy." Then Dreampaw remembered the other cat. "But she's not!" She quickly showed Lilypool and Snowrose the wounded cat. "I think she was attacked by the fox." She mewed.
Firestorm was back from chasing the fox. "It's well off our territory," He mewed when Blackpelt gave him a questioning glance.
"We were tracking the fox. Its a smart creature. It kept doubling back, we barely managed to find it." he mewed
"We encountered the fox after our training session. I attacked it while Dreampaw dragged this cat from harm's way. The fox almost killed me but Dreampaw bit its leg so hard that it started limping. After that, it was easier to drive it away." she mewed. Firestorm looked at Dreampaw proudly. "I always knew that you were a little fighter." he mewed.
Dreampaw felt proud. She had attacked a fox! That wasn't what an apprentice did everyday.
Chapter 3
Lilypool sighed. "I hate to break it up, but we need to get back to camp. Explanations can wait for later. Her wounds can't." she mewed, signaling with her tail to the gray she-cat.
Everyone agreed. They took a while getting back to camp. Lilypool had to help Snowrose, Dreampaw was still a little dizzy and Blackpelt had to help guide her and Pinefall and Firestorm had to carry the mysterious wounded cat.
When Dreampaw entered camp, Cherryfrost ran overand started making a fuss. "Where were you? You could have gotten yourself killed!" She looked up, and for the first time, she seemed to notice the other cats. She gasped when she saw Snowrose. "Firestorm!" She called to her mate. "Help Snowrose to the Medicine cat den. Lilypool went to help carry the cat, while Firestorm helped Snowrose.
When they got back, Hollystar called a clan meeting. Dreampaw felt like she was going to fall asleep on her paws, but she padded over to the Highledge and sat down.
"Today Snowrose and Dreampaw found the fox when they were hunting. Firestorm's patrol found them in time and helped drive off the fox." She told the clan. "I belive that it is well of our territory." She mewed. "But wait, I havn't finished yet. Snowrose and Dreampaw found a strange cat attacked by the fox. When she wakes up, we will hold another meeting. Also, Dreampaw has shown courage today by attacking the fox even though she hasn't even been taught the basic battle moves. She saved Snowrose's life. I am proud to have her as an apprentice in Thunderclan." Hollystar blinked warmly at her. As Dreampaw looked up proudly as her clanmates turned to look at her.
When the meeting was over, Dreampaw padded over to the medicine cat den. She saw her sister, Silverpaw, heading towards her. "I can't believe she praised me in front of the clan." Dreampaw mewed when Silverpaw reached her. "You deserved it." Silverpaw mewed. "You saved our deputy." Dreampaw changed the subject. "So, how's the strange cat?" She asked. Silverpaw looked down. "She's still unconscious." Silverpaw mewed sadly. "I was hoping she would wake up soon. I want to know how she got attacked and where her parents are. Dawncloud caught me about to squeeze a bundle of wet moss on her." Silverpaw admitted ruefully.
Dreampaw purred in amusement.
When they got to the medicine cat den, Dreampaw padded in, followed by Silverpaw.
Dreampaw saw the cat in a mossy nest.
Dreampaw padded over and crouched down, grooming the cat's fur.
Her fur was matted with blood, with cobwebs pressed onto the wounds.
Dreampaw finished grooming, sitting up. "When do you think she'll wake up?" She asked Silverpaw. "Oh, maybe tomorrow." "Sure. I'm going to get some sleep. Bye."
As Dreampaw padded towards the apprentices' den, she couldn't help thinking about the cat.
That night, she slept soundly, without a dream.
Hollystar's call jolted her awake. "Let all the cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the highlegde!"
As the cats padded out of their dens, Hollystar spoke. "Today at dawn, the strange cat has woken up." She announced. "She is in the medicine cat den right now, but will join us in a few heartbeats." As the clan waited silenty, Dreampaw thought she heard a faint mew in the medicine cat den. It didn't sound like Silverpaw or Dawncloud.The cat! She thought. Dreampaw saw something moving in the medicine cat den. Then, slowly, a cat padded out. She stared at all the cats, and shrank back a bit.
Dreampaw looked up as Hollystar spoke. "Will you please tell us your name, little one?" She asked softly.
The cat spoke quietly, and Dreampaw strained to hear. "My name is Mist." "Will you tell us what happened to you, Mist?" Hollystar pressed.
"Well, I just woke up from my nap, and my mother told me to stay in our makeshift den. She said that she scented fox." Mist kept getting louder and louder, sounding more and more confident.
"She and my father went out to investigate, and I waited for a long time. They didn't come back, so I stalked out to look for them. I scented fox, and it was really near, I saw the dead bodies of my mother and father, and I was trembling with fear and rage. At the same time, the fox scented me, and before I had time to run, it attacked me. I fainted on the spot, and I guess that's where you found me."
"Thank you for sharing your story." Hollystar mewed softly. "You may go back to thye medicine cat den, and I shall think about what we will do with you."
Mist sprang up. "Wait. Umm, Silverpaw sort of told me about the clans, and I umm, want to join." Mist looked down at her paws. "That's a good idea, Mist." Hollystar purred. "We will see to your apprentice ceremony around sunhigh." I need to think about your mentor. This meeting is over." With that, Hollystar turned and bounded off the Highledge and padded into her den.
As the cats padded into circles, murmuring quietly, Dreampaw ran over to Mist. "Hi!" She mewed. "Hello!" Mist replied. "I can't wait for my apprentice ceremony. I wonder who my mentor will be." "My mentor is the deputy!" Dreampaw told her.
Mist purred. "Lucky." "Want me to show you around?" Dreampaw offered.
"Sure! Thanks" Mist replied. "Can we start with the apprentices' den?" "Come with me!" Dreampaw bounded over to the apprentices' den with Mist right behind. "Let's go inside!" Dreampaw mewed when they got there. As the two friends padded into the apprentices' den, they didn't notice some cat watching them. Watching them closely...
Re: Dreamstar's Sacrifice
Chapter 4
Two warriors faced each other, snarling, in a dark, gloomy forest. One was brown, and one was black.
The brown warrior leaped first, but the black one darted to the side.
The brown warior landed on four paws and spun around, glaring at the black tom.
He leaped again, about to land on the black tom's back.
But the black warrior was ready. He leaped at the same moment, raking his opponent's
belly.
The brown warrior yowled in pain as blood spilled out of his wound.
He glared at the black tom, his eyes full of fury. He lashed his tail, baring his teeth into a snarl. He leaped again, aiming for his opponent's throught. The black warrior darted away just in time, flashing out a paw as he feinted to the side. The brown warrior hissed in fury, trying to get at the black warrior.
The black warrior glared at the brown tom mockingly. "Your still too slow." He taunted. The brown warrior yowled in pain as the black tom sank his teeth into his opponent's leg. "Give up yet?" The black warrior hissed, lashing his tail. The brown warrior spat at his opponent, furiously trying to reach the black warrior. The black warrior sprang at his opponent, landing evenly on his shoulders. He clawed the brown tom with his sharp claws, as the brown warrior sank to the ground, desperately trying to free himself. He went limp, and the black warrior released his tight grasp on the brown tom.
Quick as a mouse, the brown sprang up and landed evenly on all four paws, hissing a challenge. The black warrior let out a frustrated growl, glaring at his opponent. He ran at the brown warrior, flashing a paw out and raking his opponent's flank as he raced past. He turned aroud and glared at the brown warrior. He leaped to the side, striking out a paw and jabbed the brown warrior with thorn sharp claws. The brown warrior landed on the ground, only to scramble to his paws in a heartbeat. Suddenly, he crouched down, looking as though he had given up.
The black tom let out a yowl of triumph and leaped at the brown warrior. The brown warrior sprang up, clawing the black tom, and they landed with a sickening thud, the brown warrior on top of the black one, claws at his throught, and clawing the black warrior's belly with his hind claws.
The black warrior thrashed and clawed fearfully, but couldn't escape the brown warrior's grasp.
"Enough." The newcomer stepped out of the brambles. He was a big dark brown tabby. His menacing amber eyes had been watching the whole battle.
The brown warrior let the other cat up, who scrambled to his paws, spitting furiously.
"Darkclaw." The tabby turned to the black warrior. "You need to be faster if you want to defeat any enemy warrior. You are strong, but you depend too much on you're strength. A warrior needs speed to win a battle too, not just strength." He growled. "Yes Tigerstar." Darkclaw answered. "I'll work on it."
"Hawkfrost." Tigerstar turned to the brown warrior. "You too, like Darkclaw, depend to much on your strength. Remember that you need to be faster."
Hawkfrost nodded. "As soon as we are fit to defeat any warrior in battle, we can destroy the warrior code." He added with a low growl.
"Yes" Tigerstar hissed, his voice smooth as honey. "What have Starclan ever done for the clans?" He asked, his voice growing louder.
"All they do is stuff themselves with fresh kill and pretend to watch the clans, day and night, making sure they follow the warrior code." He hissed, filling the forest with the echo of his voice.
"But what good will they be when the warrior code is gone?" he asked with a hiss.
Darkclaw and Hawkfrost nodded eagerly, as if they were imagining life after the warrior code was gone.
"Hawkfrost, weren't you supposed to go visit that apprentice?" Tigerstar asked.
"Yes." Hawkfrost grunted.
"I'll go now." With that, he turned and disappeared into the mist.
Tigerstar turned back to Darkclaw.
"First of all, we need to have you become deputy. Hollystar made a horrible choice when she chose Snowrose as deputy. She couldn't even defeat the fox by herself." Tigerstar hissed in disgust. Starclan are fools. In the last battle, they let me survive. So now, I have a new plan to destroy the clans that they left behind."
"What is it?" Darkclaw asked eagerly.
"Listen to what I have to tell you..."
