Brightstar's Untitled Fanfic

I was the regular one, the plain, ordinary of the ordinary one. In other stories, the point of view is always told in that of the hero. The character that has the great destiny and power. But not me.

My name was Gray. Graykit, Graypaw, Graysky. Named for the pale gray colour of my slightly up-tilted eyes. So plain, compared to my littermates. Pearl. Pearlkit, Pearlpaw, Pearldust. Scorch. Scorchkit, Scorchpaw, Scorchstorm.

Pearl was a beautiful, cream-white furred she-cat. Her eyes were gorgeous, the colour of turquoise sea waves. Her figure was slim and gracefully shaped, with her triangular head and dainty paws. She could run faster than the fastest dog, swim better an otter. Her very presence was calming, and her tongue was very persuasive indeed. Almost unusually so.

Scorch was a fighter. He was hot-tempered and sharp-tongued, fierce and temperamental. If Pearl was water, he was fire. His dark amber eyes reflected his nature, and whenever he glared at you, you'd think the colour of those irises were like hot embers, volatile enough to explode into an inferno at any moment. His pelt was black like mine, but even darker. His claws, fully extended, were three-and-a-half inches long. When he fought, he was a bolt of lightning, strong and swift. Deadly.

I was their shadow in their path to greatness. I was medium-sized, lean and wiry. My build was for jumping and climbing, my mind wired for quick reflexes and infinite patience. It made me a natural hunter, and it was I who brought back prey in the harshest of leaf-bares when others couldn't. Did I get noticed along with my littermates? No. Perhaps it was my fault. Our father, Phoenixglare, once commented on my 'lack of presence.' Perhaps it was because of my inclination to usually speaking only when necessary.

Cats usually forgot about me. Next to my sister and my brother, I was easily forgotten. My ordinary appearance, personality, name. Even "Graysky" held no particular meaning. My eyes simply had reminded Amberstar of a cloudy morning sky.

I'd always thought my eyes were more silver than gray after inspecting my reflection in the lake. Wouldn't 'Silver' be such a better name? Silversky. Ah, that name still rings like the finest tune.

But it was my destiny to be ordinary with my extraordinary littermates. Fire and ice? Ha.
