The Winter Of Shadows

Post by Dragonclaw on December 14th 2011, 20:06

First topic message reminder :

The Winter Of Shadows

---
What in StarClan's name...

---
Prologue
---
Nightwind trampled through the snow. His paws were cold and wet from the magical frozen fluff, but he was content after stumbling upon some nice prey earlier today. He had brought it back to his Clan Leader, who lauded him with much praise. Pleased, Nightwind had a nice meal and had now gone for a walk.

Nightwind strolled through the dark woods. It was not evening yet, nor was it late afternoon, yet the darkness seemed to close in around. It was strange... a shadowy world in a winter wonderland. Nightwind stopped at the frozen river and was startled to see a big hunk of ice float pass him. As he looked, more ice chunks glided by the swirling river. Find a line of stepping stones, Nightwind hurried along to the other side of the river. The tall pine trees on this side of the forest made day seem like night. Nightwind shivered. He hoped to cross it soon. He couldn't wait to return to camp, to see his loving mate and his young kits. Suddenly Nightwind stopped. What was that noise? He couldn't hear it anymore. Probably snow falling from the trees, he though to himself. He continued through the forest. He suddenly stopped again. He had a gut feeling that he was not alone in this forest. There was an malevolent presence here. The shadows seemed to be moving.
Suddenly terrified, Nightwind ran. He ran as if he flew through the trees. And he sensed him. He knew he was here. He was behind him. And his power was unstoppable.
Nightwind's vision flashed of a sudden red, he stumbled, and his vision faded to black.

Meanwhile..
Wolves Are Attacking The Clans!
A harsh winter storm has just hit. Freezing temperatures, ice, snow, and very scarce prey. Food is hard to find. These conditions have made the wolves of a land far off quite desperate. These packs of canines have wandered into the clan lands searching for food..

The Cats of the Clans were catching what prey they could, minding their own business. Rumors of an evil ghost cat in the woods had been the talk of the camps for a few days already and was already troubling the Clans.

And then... this pack of wolves overtook the area overnight. They killed many cats who didn't flee or hide in time and stole freshkill from the camps. The wolves are believed to be hiding in the great caves somewhere on the IceClan mountain. They travel to the Clans to wreak havoc and destruction.
The Clan Leaders have come together in a Gathering to address this time of need.
What will your Clan do?
What will you do?

"Are you okay, Riverpaw?" Stonestream asked, concern in his voice. "Is your shoulder still bleeding?"

Applefur dipped her head respectfully. Knowing the RiverClan cats wouldnt want to sleep outside like WindClan she yowled. "WindClan will be sleeping outside while RiverClan cats can sleep in the dens." Applefur yowled. She flicked her tail towards the warriors den. "That is the warriors den, you may get yourself situated in any nest in the den. There..." She added flicking her tail toward the apprentices den. "Is the apprentices den." Applefur added. She padded over to Riverpaw and mewed. "Come, lets go see Fernleaf to treat your shoulder before it gets infected." Applefur mewed.

Riverpaw reluctantly left Wolfpaw's side and padded after Applefur. "Won't the warriors be angry about sleeping out in the open?" she asked. "After all, its kind of our fault that we barged in like this." She glanced around anxiously.

Honeystar watched in amusement as Streamfur and her kits went into the Nursery. Thank StarClan our Nursery has plenty of room for them. Our Clan has not had any kits after Applefur's, Sagedapple's and mine became apprentices. Almost as if on que he could hear the excited mews of his kits as they rushed over to greet Riverpaw and their other old friends from RiverClan. Turning his attention back to Brightstar. He made a slight shake with his head.
"We may be the two largest clans here, but I fear that may not be enough to stop them. As I mentioned at the Gathering, and as you can clearly see for yourself, most of my warriors are still not yet ready to make battle. This is a matter of all the Clans, since the wolves have affected them one way or another. We should at least talk with Shadowstar. His Warriors are nearly starved but unscathed. They could prove to be helpful, especially since they got a dog with them too."

"That's true," Brightstar conceded. "But we can't depend on the dogs. Two dogs against 6 wolves? That would be suicide. I think our best chance would be to ally ourselves with IceClan and ShadowClan. In fact, with everyone, if possible. It would be hard to drag everyone into this, though. Even with everyone attacking together, many cats would die."

"I know." Honeystar solemnly agreed. "That has all been in my mind since the Gathering." If only Kali was here with us. At least we would have had a fighting chance at defeating the wolves.

Brightstar rubbed her paw over the sand on the ground, making swirly-patterns. When she looked up again, her eyes were sharp and fierce. "Well, everyone has to join to get rid of the wolves! If we don't, then whole Clans could disappear!"

Wolfpaw sadly watched Riverpaw head towards the Medicine Den. By now all of his siblings (not to mention the rest of WindClan) were here to see what all the excitement was about. I hope she will be comfortable.
"First allowing ShadowClan to hunt in our territory, now offering our Camp to RiverClan? What is Honeystar thinking?!" Wolfpaw could hear one of the elders grumbling.
Letting out a heavy sigh, Wolfpaw decided to go back hunting. So many mouths to feed now. Hopefully RiverClan will be able to pull their own weight while they're here.

Honeystar laid in his den pondering about what Brightstar had said earlier that day. WindClan needed more warriors. Ones who were fit enough to hunt and fight for their clans during this great hardship. Suddenly, he realized where he would find such warriors. I didn't think this would come so soon already. But by StarClan, now's the time when we need them more than ever. Leaving his Den, Honeystar climbed up to the high ridge [or rock] and yowled out, "Let all cats old enough to chase their own prey, or swim [giving reference to the RiverClan visitors], gather around for a clan Meeting!"

Applefur pricked her ears. Hearing Honeystar yowl for a Clan meeting curiosity pricked at her pelt. Hmm I wonder why hes calling a clan meeting... She thought. Applefur sat down below High Ridge in her usually spot where the deputy sat and faced both RiverClan and WindClan. She watched as her kits padded out of the apprentices den their faces lit with curiosity.

Honeystar watched as all of the Apprentices came out, before continuing. It seemed not so long ago when they were just playful little kits. Returning to the Present called out. "As you know, the wolves have caused a great harm to the Clans. For WindClan, the last attack had cost many of our fine warriors to lay in camp, healing from their injuries. The only reason we have remained strong was through those few warriors who were still able to hunt and guard our borders. But most importantly, through the many apprentices that StarClan has blessed us with. They have proven more now than in any assessment, that they are ready to become warriors of WindClan. And Warriors is what we will need if we are to be strong enough to drive the accursed wolves away. That is why, I would like to have all of our apprentices to step forward, and recieve their warrior names."

Applefur's eyes widened in shock and happiness. Applefur watched as her kits jaws dropped in shock. Almost immediately, excitement and happiness filled their eyes and faces and she watched as all four of her kits stepped forward happily looking at each other. Applefur smiled and remembered when they were so little, snuggling against her and climbing all over her. Applefur felt a small tear of joy gently slide down her face. All of a sudden she looked at Stormpaw's pelt almost white because of the snow, and Boltpaw, Autumnpaw and Leopardpaw's pelts werent as shining as usual. They had been working hard.

"Now unlike you apprentice ceremonies." Honeystar spoke low enough so that only the apprentices, and Applefur, could hear. "In order to save time and my voice, I will do the formalities once and just give each of you your names and virtues." With this some of them made slight mrrows, remembering how long and tedious that ordeal had been. Returning to projecting his voice, Honeystar continued the ceremony.
"I, Honeystar, Leader of WindClan, call upon my ancestors to look down on these apprentices. They have trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend them to you as warriors in turn." Now facing the apprentices, he went on. "Do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life? "
In an almost musical unison they replied "I do."
"Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior names."

~XD That was such a long ceremony~
Applefur gave a soft mrrow of amusement remembering the long and tiring apprentice ceremony and remembered how her kits had almost burst in excitement. She watched happily as her kits eyes shined as they awaited their warrior names. "Im so proud of them." She whispered happily smiling.

Maplepaw watched as Honeystar leaped down from the high ledge and walked up to him.
"From this moment Maplepaw, you will be known as Mapleheart. StarClan honours you for your strength and kindness."
Honeystar placed his muzzle on his eldest son's head, and Mapleheart licked his father's shoulder.
"Mapleheart! Mapleheart! Mapleheart!" Called out both cats from WindClan and RiverClan as they greeted his new name.
A sense of pride and joy began to surge inside Mapleheart as he gazed upon his family and clan-mates.

Moonpaw watched as Honeystar had given Mapleheart his new name, and then walked towards her. "From this moment, you shall be Moonsplash. StarClan honours your Intelligence and Independence." And with that did same thing as he had done with Mapleheart.
"Moonsplash!! Moonsplash!! Moonsplash!!" The crowd now began to cheer outloud.

Wolfpaw watched intensely with his two-coloured eyes as Honeystar came to him next.
"StarClan honours you for your courage and loyalty. From this moment you shall be known as Wolfsong."
Wolfsong looked among the many cats calling out his name, then finally spotted Riverpaw, who called his new name joyfully. It was almost too good to be true. Having her here during this moment, made him feel as if they were really part of one giant clan rather than two large clans in the same camp. Making sure no one was really looking, Wolfsong mouthed out "I love you" towards Riverpaw. Despite the loud cheering and the distance between them, he could actually hear Riverpaw purring back with affection.

Honeypaw noticed the scene going between Wolfsong and Riverpaw with warmth. She still remembered the time as kits the two of them had helped save her from an attacking pike.
"You shall be know as Honeyflower. StarClan honours you for your compassion and honesty." Honeystar mewed sweetly to her.

Craneflight watched and listened in awe as everyone called out his name.

Peachpaw was totally excited as her turn came at last.
"You shall be known, from this moment on, as Peachfur. StarClan honours your Energy and Enthusiasm."
Peachfur noticed that Honeystar's voice was beginning to tire. she gave an additional lick to his nose and beamed her green eyes at him.
Honeystar gave a soft purr in thanks as he moved on to Applefur's kits next.
"Peachfur!! Peachfur!! Peachfur!!!"
Peachfur began taking in the moment as if it were a warm Greenleaf sunlight.

Tigerspirit padded out of camp, hoping to find some prey. She hissed in frustation, no prey was in sight or scent. She kept traveling through the snow, her mouth wide open, scenting for prey. She flattened her ears, trying to see through the snow. She sunk lower in the snow as more snow came piling down. "I have to get to somewhere covered." She breathed, and jumped towards an hole on the side of the cliff. She climbed in and began to clean the snow off her fur. She curled up in a ball and wrapped her tail around her frozen pink nose.

Honeystar walked towards his apprentice. He certainly has grown up to be a great warrior. Just like another cat I use to know. He gave a quick look at the young black tom before speaking. "Stormpaw, from this moment on, you shall be known as Stormstrike." Giving his apprentice the true name of [his mother] Tigresspool's old Mentor, Stormstaff. "StarClan honours you for your determination and forethought." And with that nudged heads with the new warrior.

Tigerspirit shivered and realized that she been caved into the hole by the snow. She frantically clawed and pushed at the snow, trying to get out. Her eyes became slits as she couldn`t get the snow out of the way. She tried until her pink paw pads were numb. She licked her paws, hoping to warm them. Her paws were covered in frost, and they were freezing! She continued licking them, her paws still covered in snow. She continued licking them, hoping they weren`t frost-bitten. She had never been so scared in her life! "Help!" She screamed, knowing no one could hear her.

Boltpaw watched as his brother, Stormstrike padded over and sat down beside Mapleheart. Stormstrike, already looking like a warrior flashed Boltpaw an encouraging smile and Boltpaw sheepishly grinned back. His tail swished on the ground as he anticipated his turn to become a warrior. This is it! He thought excitement welling up inside him. He felt confidence from Autumnpaw and Leopardpaw and raised his head, his broad shoulders back.
